Among the top tourist destinations in China, Kunming—also known as the “Spring City”—stands out for its pleasant climate and laid-back charm. While travelers often have mixed reviews about visiting Kunming, it remains a must-see for those looking to experience authentic local culture without breaking the bank. As a travel enthusiast currently based in Kunming, I’ve explored the city thoroughly. This guide focuses on must-visit scenic spots and insider tips to help you plan an unforgettable and budget-friendly trip to Kunming.

1:Timing
The main attraction of Kunming tourism promotion is “Spring City”. This is mainly because Kunming is located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau with a low latitude . The high-altitude climate in summer is not too hot. In winter, due to the low latitude and the mountain range in the north, the temperature is not too cold. However, friends who come to Kunming should still pay attention to the weather forecast: in winter, although the temperature in Kunming is basically above 10 degrees, once it encounters rain and snow, the temperature will drop sharply, sometimes below zero ; even on sunny days in winter, the temperature difference between day and night is relatively large, so pay attention to adding or removing clothes. If you travel to Kunming in summer, you may encounter the rainy season. In the rainy season, Kunming’s precipitation sometimes continues for several weeks. If you come to Kunming at this time, you may be troubled by the continuous rain. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to the weather forecast before traveling to Kunming. Cities like Kunming are very suitable for playing on sunny days. Since Kunming has less air pollution, you can experience the so-called ” plateau blue ” when you come to Kunming on sunny days. Generally speaking, coming to Kunming in winter is the best choice. On the one hand, you can avoid the cold weather in many parts of the country. On the other hand, there is the least rainy weather in winter, and the travel comfort and photo-taking effects are the best.

2:Accommodation and Transportation
Accommodation in Kunming is quite rich and varied, with all kinds of hotels of all types and sizes available. If you want to choose the most economical hotel, of course, it is still a youth hostel. Youth hostels in Kunming generally cost 20 to 50 yuan per day. Some theme youth hostels have very design-oriented interiors, and ordinary youth hostels can at least be clean and tidy. In addition to youth hostels, there are other affordable hotel options. If you choose carefully, you can also find good hotels below 100 or 100 to 200.
Kunming’s transportation is also relatively convenient. There are already 5 subway lines in operation, and buses can reach most tourist attractions. To reach attractions in cities and counties surrounding Kunming, you can consider high-speed rail/ordinary express + bus.

3:Tourist Attractions
Overview
As a national historical and cultural city, a well-known tourist city and the so-called “Spring City”, Kunming has many attractive tourist resources, but how to choose must be planned in advance. Let me talk about the advantages of Kunming’s tourist attractions compared to other cities.
The first advantage is that there are many types of scenic spots to choose from. For example, friends who like natural scenery can go to Dianchi Lake, Xishan Mountain, Shilin, Jiaozi Snow Mountain and other scenic spots; friends who like ancient buildings can go to Daguan Tower, Zhenqing Temple, Jindian, Guandu Ancient Town and other places; friends who like snacks can go to Nanping Pedestrian Street, Daguan Zhuanxin, near the Confucian Temple , near Yunnan University… The second advantage is that Kunming has many unique tourist attractions. Under the trend of homogenization of major tourist cities, ancient towns and villages across the country, Kunming still has many unique and difficult-to-replicate attractions, such as Dounan Flower Market , Jacaranda Park, Daguan Zhuanxin. The third point is that most of the attractions in Kunming are free, and even if there are paid attractions, they are not particularly expensive. This advantage will also be mentioned in the introduction of attractions below. Since this article aims to introduce how to travel in Kunming on a budget, these free attractions are what I want to introduce in particular.
Since Kunming has a wide variety of tourist attractions, I have divided the recommended attractions into the following categories: wetlands, mountains and forests, modern landscapes, ancient buildings (including historical blocks), modern buildings, and museums.
Wetland Landscape :
Wetland landscape around Dianchi Lake
The ancient city of Kunming was located in the north of Dianchi Lake, while the modern city of Kunming is being developed around Dianchi Lake . Therefore, a series of wetland parks have been built in the north, east and south of Dianchi Lake, which can not only bring tourism benefits, but also protect the ecological environment of Dianchi Lake and beautify the city scenery. From north to south, there are Haigeng Dam, Haigeng Park, Haidong Wetland Park, Wangguan Wetland Park, Dounan Wetland Park, Laoyuhe Wetland Park, Dongdahe Wetland Park, etc. In addition, there are Cuihu Park and Daguanlou Park, which belong to the Dianchi Lake water system.
These wetland parks have their own characteristics. If you want to see different scenery, you can choose to visit different wetland parks.
Haigeng Dam, Haigeng Park, Daguanlou Park and Cuihu Park in the north of Dianchi Lake are good places to enjoy the red-billed gulls. Since the 1980s, a large number of red-billed gulls have come to the Dianchi Lake basin to spend the winter every winter. These birds are not afraid of people because they have been living with citizens and tourists all year round. The filming effect is excellent when feeding them.

Wangguan Wetland Park, Dounan Wetland Park , Laoyuhe Wetland Park and Haiyan Village Pier in the east of Dianchi Lake are good places to watch the sunset. The vast Dianchi Lake, the lake breeze, and the sunset slowly sinking into the west mountain are breathtaking views that are unforgettable.

The most recommended place is Haiyan Village Pier. Haiyan Village is a fishing village on the southeast bank of Dianchi Lake . In recent years, it has undergone some tourism development and is a favorite place for Kunming people. The village still retains the bluestone paths and the ancient imprints. The lakeside next to it is an excellent place to watch the sunset. After visiting the ancient village and appreciating the sunset, you can also taste the fish feast here.

Jinning Dongdahe Wetland Park, located south of Dianchi Lake, is the place with the best water quality in Dianchi Lake and has a beach for sightseeing. For transportation, you can choose to take a bus from the South Bus Station.

Fuxian Lake
Although Fuxian Lake does not belong to Kunming, it is very close to Kunming. It is also a very cost-effective tourist attraction. Fuxian Lake can be said to be the lake with the best water quality in Yunnan. The clear water quality and the blue lake surface are breathtakingly beautiful. The well-developed tourist attractions around Fuxian Lake include Moon Bay, Luchong Scenic Area , Gushan Tourist Scenic Area, and Reshuitang Scenic Area.

To go from Kunming to Chengjiang, you can take the subway from the main urban area to the Southern Bus Station, and then take a bus from the Southern Bus Station to Chengjiang County. There are buses from Chengjiang County to these attractions. From the location point of view, Moon Bay is closest to Chengjiang County and is the most convenient to reach. Several other places can also be reached directly from the county by bus. It is recommended to go and return on the same day from Kunming to Fuxian Lake. The daily budget can be controlled at around 100 yuan.
Mountain and forest landscape :
Xishan
Xishan is the most famous mountain in Kunming. Since the Shanchan Marquis Gao family built a villa on Xishan, it has gradually become a famous place in Kunming. Xishan has rich cultural landscapes, including ancient buildings such as Yang Sheng’an Temple, Huating Temple , Taihua Temple, Longmen Grottoes, as well as modern and contemporary historical sites such as Nie Er’s Tomb . The mountain is densely forested and the hiking trail is very comfortable. After climbing Longmen, you can overlook the panoramic view of Kunming City and Dianchi Lake. It is a good place to experience both cultural landscapes and natural scenery.

Changchong Mountain
Changchong Mountain is located in the northern suburbs of Kunming. The mountain is not very tall, but it has sparse vegetation, a wide view, and no time limit for climbing. It is a good place to overlook the beauty of Kunming and Dianchi Lake, enjoy the sunset, and appreciate the night view of Kunming.

Yuantong Mountain ( Kunming Zoo )
Yuantong Mountain is a small mountain located in the center of Kunming. The mountain is mainly home to the Kunming Zoo and some ruins of ancient buildings. The most famous thing here is the Cherry Blossom Festival held every spring , but it has become increasingly popular in recent years and there are too many people. If you think there are too many people, Yuantong Street in front of the mountain is also a good place to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

Heilongtan Park
Heilongtan Park has been a very popular tourist attraction in Kunming since the 1980s. The park is very large and has a small hill. There are many flowers and plants in the park, where you can enjoy plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, and ginkgo leaves.

Jiaozi Snow Mountain
This is the highest mountain in Kunming. There are special tourist buses to go here, but this “snow mountain” does not have snow all year round. It is beautiful when there is snow, but the scenery is also very good when there is no snow. The scenic area is very large, it is recommended to stay here for one night, and the round trip time will be very tight on the same day. However, the cost of a trip here is relatively high, so it is not recommended for friends who travel on a budget to go here.

Yiling Jiuxiang Scenic Area
This is also a scenic spot with beautiful scenery among the cities and counties under Kunming. Now there are tourist buses from Kunming to Jiuxiang , and the tickets here are relatively affordable. After playing here, if there is still time, friends who like ancient buildings can also go to the old street of Yiling County .

Stone Forest (including the Big and Small Stone Forest and Naigu Stone Forest)
The Stone Forest is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Kunming. Many tourists who go to Kunming will check in here. But I want to tell you how to visit the Stone Forest in the most economical way and get the best experience at the same time.
Let’s talk about transportation first (the following will talk about the Big and Small Stone Forest Scenic Area first ). If you are departing from the main urban area of Kunming, it is recommended to take a bus from the Eastern Bus Station to the Stone Forest Scenic Area. If you are departing from Chenggong New District, it is recommended to take the high-speed rail from Kunming South Station to Shilin West Station, and then take a bus from the high-speed rail station to the Stone Forest Scenic Area.
Then there is the issue of buying tickets. If you are going to Shilin with two or more groups, you can buy group tickets, which are much cheaper; if you are going alone, you can also temporarily find individual tourists to form a team and buy group tickets.
The Stone Forest Scenic Area is very large, and there are many attractions to see, but most tourists only gather at a few spots to check in and take photos. If you have enough time, you can visit all the attractions in the scenic area. The Stone Forest Scenic Area includes. These attractions have their own characteristics, but except for a few check-in spots, many beautiful places are not visited by people. The so-called “the closer the easy, the more tourists, and the farther the dangerous, the fewer tourists” is probably like this.
So, is it worth going to a famous tourist attraction like the Stone Forest, which has a lot of photos? I think it is worth going. Because the feeling of visiting it in person is completely different from looking at photos, documentaries, or VR panoramas. The shock and novelty are beyond words. Moreover, the roads inside these stone forests are complicated and the scenery often changes. There is a sense of adventure, which cannot be experienced by looking at photos or videos.

As for Naigu Stone Forest, it is a scenic spot that has emerged in recent years. Naigu Stone Forest is located 8 kilometers north of the ” Stone Forest Scenic Area “. Compared with the “Stone Forest Scenic Area”, it presents another feature and style. The transportation here is not as convenient as the Big and Small Stone Forests, but the advantage is that the ticket price is more affordable and fewer people go there.
Modern characteristic landscape :
The so-called modern characteristic landscape is the unique landscape formed in Kunming during the modern urban construction. In addition to the unique natural landscape and historical and cultural landscape, this is another major symbol of a city’s individuality. In the process of urban development, Kunming has also formed some such modern characteristic landscapes.
Dounan Flower Market

Kunming is a city surrounded by flowers all year round. The Dounan Flower Market is the largest fresh cut flower distribution market in Asia, but apart from this title, it is also an extremely interesting tourist attraction.
Dounan Flower Market consists of a large indoor flower trading venue and surrounding ancillary buildings. It can be said that in addition to buying flowers, there are also a lot of dining, shopping and entertainment facilities here. I think the snacks are the most outstanding here, covering all kinds of snacks from all over the world. If you are traveling with your children, you can experience the entertainment facilities.
As for the flowers sold in Dounan Flower Market, the variety is dazzling (some of the things sold here are unexpected, such as cotton, wheat ears, and dogtail grass), and even window-shopping (just looking without buying) is a good experience. The flowers here are not expensive. If you live away from home and it is inconvenient to carry them, you can send them home through the express delivery company in the flower market.
The indoor venue of Dounan Flower Market is open during the day, but you can also visit at night because there are many stalls selling flowers outdoors at night. The varieties and quality of the flowers they sell are not much different from those indoors.

Vegetable markets (represented by Daguan Zhuanxin Farmers Market)
Kunming people are very enthusiastic about visiting vegetable markets, so there are many vegetable markets. Basically, there is one in every community and village. Take Daguan Zhuanxin as an example. You can see many vegetables unique to Yunnan in this vegetable market. In addition to vegetables, there are also various snacks in the vegetable market, which are worth tasting. This is what makes Kunming vegetable markets different from many vegetable markets outside the province.
In addition to the nationally famous Daguan Zhuanxin, smaller vegetable markets also have their own characteristics, at least they have all kinds of fruits, vegetables, meats and snacks. In addition, the markets in each village are also very good, and the model is not much different from that of the vegetable market. These vegetable markets and fairs scattered throughout the city are what I like most about Kunming. In the environment where the vegetable markets in many other cities are gradually replaced by supermarkets, the vegetable markets in Kunming are still popular and are an indispensable part of the lives of Kunming people. It can be said that vegetable markets and fairs are the soul of Kunming.

Jacaranda Theme Park
The Jacaranda Theme Park is located on Jiaochang Middle Road in Kunming. As the first Jacaranda Avenue in Kunming, Jiaochang Middle Road is planted with about 250 Jacaranda trees . During the peak flowering period, clusters of flowers bloom on both sides of the road, layer upon layer, stretching into a purple-blue ribbon, dreamlike and beautiful, turning Jiaochang Middle Road into a “romantic flower street”.
Ancient buildings :
Many people may not know that Kunming is also a national historical and cultural city. The time span of Kunming’s existing ancient buildings is also very long. The earliest one is the West Temple Pagoda built in the Nanzhao Quanfengyou period (823-859) , and the existing wooden structures are all relics from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Kunming’s ancient buildings have their own distinctive characteristics: the smooth eaves, bright colors, and the handsome pagodas, combined with the blue sky and clear water of the plateau, often leave a deep impression on people. Due to space limitations, this article only introduces a few of the most representative ones, and the cultural heritage list of Kunming will be placed at the end of the article.

Guandu Ancient Town
This is the most famous ancient town in Kunming. It is well developed for tourism, but not many houses are preserved. However, the religious buildings are very good. The small ancient town is densely populated with many ancient buildings such as Fading Temple, Miaozhan Temple , Tuzhu Temple , Wenming Pavilion, Guanyin Temple, Sansheng Palace , and Randeng Temple. Of course, you can also come here to taste the food while appreciating the ancient buildings.

Golden Palace
The Kunming Golden Temple is located on Fengming Mountain in the northeast of the city. It was actually built in imitation of the Wudang Mountain Golden Temple . It is exquisitely crafted and is the largest bronze temple in the country. In fact, the Kunming Golden Temple is located in the Taihe Palace. The entire group of buildings extends from the bottom of the mountain to the top of the mountain, and the layout also imitates the palaces and temples of Wudang Mountain.

Yuantong Temple
This is the largest temple in Kunming city and also a relatively distinctive Buddhist temple.

Daguan Tower
The most famous ancient building in Kunming is also located in a garden from the Republic of China, with beautiful scenery.

Zhenqing Temple and Yanlong Temple
It houses the oldest wooden structure in Kunming.

The Sutra Pillar of the Buddha’s Crown
The Dali Kingdom Sutra Pillar has extremely exquisite carvings and is something you cannot miss when you come to Kunming to see ancient buildings. It is now collected in the Kunming Museum.

Anning Confucian Temple and Caoxi Temple
These two ancient buildings are both in Anning, and they are also two very representative ancient buildings in Yunnan. Anning is not far from the main urban area of Kunming and can be reached by bus. Next to Caoxi Temple is the famous Anning Hot Spring . Friends who are interested in hot springs can soak in the hot springs.

Qiongzhu Temple
The Arhats in Jingzhu Temple are a unique sight, and the Yuan Pagoda behind the temple is also not to be missed.

East and West Temple Pagodas
This is the collective name of the two ancient towers, the East Tower and the West Tower. The West Tower was built during the Nanzhao period and is the oldest existing ground building in Kunming . The East Tower was rebuilt after it collapsed in an earthquake in the late Qing Dynasty.
Modern architecture:
From 1840 to 1949, China entered modern times. During this period, a large number of modern styles imported from the West emerged in China. Although Yunnan is located in the southwestern border, it is not isolated in modern times. In history, Yunnan has had many exchanges with Southeast Asian countries. Especially after the opening of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway , Yunnan has a direct connection with the colonial country Vietnam. Since the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway was built by the French, the stations along the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway are also French-style. This railway has also imported many other French-style buildings into Yunnan. Later, Yunnan’s modern architectural style gradually diversified. During the Anti-Japanese War, Kunming, as the rear area, ushered in its most prosperous period in modern times. Similarly, a number of excellent buildings of this period were left behind.

Yunnan University Donglu Campus
There are many buildings from the Republic of China period, such as Huize Courtyard, a French-style teaching building, which has now been turned into the Yunnan University History Exhibition Hall. However, due to the epidemic, Yunnan University temporarily does not allow tourists to enter.

Army Academy
This should be the largest modern building in Kunming. It is worth a visit. There is also an exhibition of the Chinese Expeditionary Force inside.

Museums
The most worthwhile museums in Kunming are the Yunnan Provincial Museum and the Yunnan Provincial Museum of Ethnic Minorities , both of which are national first-class museums. In addition, the Kunming Municipal Museum, Kunming Zoological Museum , Yunnan Railway Museum, and Yunnan University History Museum (Huizeyuan) can also be considered.

Former Residences of Celebrities
Since Kunming became a cultural center in the rear area during the Anti-Japanese War , many former residences of modern celebrities have been left behind, such as the former residences of Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, Lu’s Mansion, Bing Xin’s Molu, Zhou Peiyuan’s former residence, Zhang Tianxu’s former residence, etc. The ones I listed are relatively good. If you are interested, you can check in and feel the life of modern celebrities in those days.
Whether you’re planning a short trip to China or a longer stay, Kunming offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and affordable travel experiences. I hope this guide helps you make the most of your time in this city. If you’re considering where to go next on your China tour, keep exploring—China has so much more to offer beyond the obvious!
